Why are CVT transmissions more sensitive to oil than AT transmissions? Analyze the operating mechanism, the role of CVT oil, and the risks of using the wrong oil.
Why are CVT transmissions more sensitive to oil than AT transmissions? Analyze the operating mechanism, the role of CVT oil, and the risks of using the wrong oil.
Automatic transmissions today are commonly available in two main types:
- Automatic transmission with gears (AT)
- Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)
Automatic transmission (AT) used:
- Planetary gear set
- Multi-stage clutch
- Hydraulic torque converter
Meanwhile, CVT transmissions operate based on:
- Two variable pulleys
- A metal strap or chain
- Oil pressure controlled system
This difference in structure is the main reason why CVT is used.more dependent on oil than AT.
In an automatic transmission (AT), power is transmitted through gears.
But in a CVT, power is transmitted through:
- Friction between the belt and the pulley
This means:
If there is insufficient friction, it will slip.
- If friction is too high → wear and tear
CVT transmissions must precisely control the coefficient of friction in order to:
- The straps provide sufficient grip.
- But there is still controlled slippage when changing the gear ratio.
This is what makes CVT extremely sensitive to oil.
Automatic transmission fluid (AT) mainly consists of:
- Lubrication
- Hydraulic pressure transmission
But with CVT, the engine has to do more:
- Extremely precise friction control
- Create pressure to hold the pulley
- Indirect power transmission via belt
The difficulty lies in:
- It shouldn't be too slippery.
- Don't be too "attached".
If the oil specifications are incorrect:
- Sliding belt
- Worn pulley
- The gearbox wears out quickly.
Under actual operating conditions in Vietnam:
- Prolonged traffic jam
- High ambient temperature
- The car was moving slowly and continuously.
- CVT transmissions must operate at consistently high temperatures.
When the temperature rises:
- Viscosity varies
- Friction-reducing additives
- The pulley's ability to hold force is reduced.
This makes CVT easy to:
- Strap sliding
- Vibration during acceleration
- Reduces gearbox lifespan.
One of the common mistakes is:
- Use ATF oil for CVT transmissions.
- Using substandard oil
In an automatic transmission (AT), the wrong oil level can cause:
- Shifting gears is not smooth.
But with CVT, the consequences can be more serious:
- Strap sliding
- Pulley failure
- Gearbox overhaul
This is why CVT is always required.specialized oil.
In the context of Vietnam, the following recommendations are made:
- 30.000 – 50.000 km
If the vehicle:
- I drive a lot in the city.
- Frequent traffic jams
- Running services
- It should have been checked sooner.
Changing the oil at the right time helps:
- Maintain stable friction.
- Protects belts and pulleys
- Reduces the risk of major damage.
CVT transmissions are more sensitive to oil than AT transmissions because:
- Power is transmitted through friction instead of gears.
- It depends entirely on the properties of the oil.
- Sensitive to temperature and operating conditions
Understanding this mechanism correctly helps car owners:
- Choose the right type of oil
- Change the oil at the right time.
- Provides more effective protection for the gearbox.
